Despite carrying "Chandan" in its name, Gopi Chandan is not sandalwood — it is a fine, naturally occurring clay, pale white to soft yellow in colour, traditionally mined from the Gomti riverbed and Gopi Talav near Dwarka. In Vaishnav thought, "chandan" here refers to purity, cooling, and auspiciousness rather than the sandalwood plant itself.

The Story Behind Gopi Chandan

According to Vaishnav tradition, the Gopis of Vrindavan, in deep separation from Lord Krishna after he departed for Dwarka, are said to have merged into the sacred earth there. This sanctified clay came to be known as Gopi Chandan — carrying, for devotees, the devotion and longing of the Gopis themselves.

Why Vaishnavas Apply Tilak

Tilak made from Gopi Chandan is traditionally applied in a U-shape (Urdhva Pundra) on the forehead, said to represent the feet of Lord Vishnu or Krishna, with a central line traditionally associated with the Tulsi leaf. Devotees across Gaudiya Vaishnav and ISKCON traditions apply it daily, most often in the morning before chanting or puja, as an outward mark of devotion and surrender.

How to Apply

• Mix a small amount of Gopi Chandan with a few drops of water to form a smooth paste.
• Traditionally applied using the ring finger.
• Apply in the U-shape across the forehead, or as guided by your tradition or guru.
• Commonly done in the morning, before chanting or puja.
