How to identify real kesar (simple home test)

1. Take a glass of plain water or warm milk and drop in 3-4 kesar threads.
2. Watch the colour. Original kesar does not turn the water coloured right away. It starts leaving its colour slowly, usually after at least 2-3 minutes, and the water turns golden-yellow bit by bit.
3. If the water changes colour immediately and turns deep red or orange, the kesar is not original. It has been artificially coloured.

You can follow the same test with kesar bought anywhere. Real kesar always takes its time.

How to use kesar

• Kesar milk: soak 4-5 threads in 2 tablespoons of warm milk for 10-15 minutes, then mix into a glass of milk.
• Tilak and puja: soak a few threads in a little water or milk, and use it for tilak or to offer in puja.
• Prasad and sweets: add the soaked kesar to kheer, halwa, laddu and other prasad.
• Cooking: use in biryani, pulao, sweets and desserts for natural colour and aroma.
