What Do the Three Rounds Mean?

Have you noticed that some devotees wear one round of Tulsi, some two, and some three? There is no single rigid rule in shastra — the number follows the devotee's bhav and the teaching of their sampradaya (tradition).

In the Gaudiya Vaishnav tradition — the tradition followed by ISKCON — the three rounds carry a beautiful meaning. The three strands stand for:

• Shri Radha (Priya) — the beloved.
• Shri Krishna (Pritam) — the beloved Lord. Together, Radha and Krishna are the Ishta, the divine couple.
• The Guru / Acharya — the spiritual master who guides the devotee to Them.

So a three-round kanthi honours not only Shri Radha and Shri Krishna, but also the Guru who reveals the path of bhakti. For Gaudiya and ISKCON devotees, it is the fullest expression of this three-fold devotion — Radha, Krishna, and Guru.

Why the Tulsi Kanthi Is Sacred

In the Vaishnav tradition, Tulsi is not an ordinary plant. She is revered as Vrinda Devi, or Tulsi Maharani, and is dear above all to Shri Krishna — so dear that no offering to the Lord is complete without a Tulsi leaf. To wear Tulsi wood, then, is to keep something truly sacred close to the heart.

It is said in the tradition that once a Tulsi kanthi is worn, it is kept on at all times. The kanthi itself remains pure and is understood to purify — like the Ganga, which is never impure — so devotees wear it continuously and do not remove it, even while bathing.

The Mantra for Wearing Tulsi Kanthi

Wear the kanthi with faith, not in a hurry. As given in Shri Hari Bhakti Vilas, recite this prayer while putting it on:

अर्थ (हिंदी): हे तुलसी काष्ठ से उत्पन्न माले, हे श्रीकृष्ण के भक्तों को प्रिय! मैं आपको अपने कंठ में धारण करता/करती हूँ। कृपया मुझे श्रीकृष्ण का प्रिय बना दीजिए।

Meaning (English): O mala born of Tulsi wood, dear to the devotees of Shri Krishna — I wear you around my neck; kindly make me dear to Shri Krishna. Devotees then also pray to Tulsi Devi to make them dear to the devotees of Shri Vishnu.

How to Wear a Tulsi Kanthi Mala

A 3 round kanthi is worn the same way as any Tulsi kanthi:

1. Clean the mala; if you like, apply a little cow ghee on the beads to make them stronger and add shine.
2. Offer the mala to Shri Hari first, with a short prayer.
3. Then wear it yourself while reciting the mantra above, and keep it on continuously.

The scriptures say the devotee who offers the Tulsi mala to the Lord first, and only then wears it, is counted among the finest of devotees (bhagavatottam).

These glories of Tulsi are described in scriptures such as the Skanda Purana and Padma Purana (given by Bhagavan Vyasa), the Garuda Purana, Srimad Bhagavatam and Shri Hari Bhakti Vilas. • Purity while taking prasad — taking Bhagavat prasad while wearing the Tulsi kanthi is described in these Puranas as especially pure and blessed.
• A shield for the devotee — the Garuda Purana speaks of Tulsi keeping fear and bad influences away.
• The messengers of Yama keep away — the Ajamil story in Srimad Bhagavatam tells how they are asked to stay away from those devoted to the Lord.
• A pure and blameless life — Shri Hari Bhakti Vilas links wearing Tulsi with cleanliness of body and heart.
• A calm, clear mind — devotees experience Tulsi as lifting heaviness and settling the mind in remembrance.

The Four Principles Devotees Follow

In the ISKCON and Gaudiya Vaishnav tradition, devotees who wear the Tulsi kanthi usually keep four simple principles of clean, devotional living:

• No meat, fish or eggs — a pure vegetarian diet; many also avoid onion and garlic.
• No intoxicants — including alcohol, tobacco, and even tea and coffee.
• No gambling.
• No illicit relationships — faithfulness in married life.

You do not need formal diksha (initiation) to begin. Even if you cannot follow everything at once, you are welcome to wear the kanthi with faith and grow gradually. Many devotees find that simply wearing Tulsi ji slowly brings a gentle, positive change in themselves and their home.

Can You Wear Tulsi and Rudraksha Together?

Yes. According to shastra, both Tulsi and Rudraksha may be worn, and there is no scriptural rule that forbids wearing them together. Great saints — such as Pujya Swami Karpatri Ji Maharaj — are known to have worn both Tulsi and Rudraksha. So if you have devotion for both, you may wear them together with faith.
