This kanthi is a single round Tulsi mala with one Rudraksha bead. The Tulsi beads are 2mm cylindrical — the finest size we make — so the mala sits close to the neck and stays gentle and subtle through the day. The 5 mukhi Rudraksha is 6mm, three times the bead width, so it rests clearly at the centre rather than disappearing into the strand.

Can Tulsi and Rudraksha Be Worn Together?

Why 2mm Tulsi With a 6mm Rudraksha

The size difference is deliberate. On a 4mm or 6mm Tulsi strand, a Rudraksha bead of similar width blends into the line and the contrast is lost. Against 2mm beads, a 6mm Rudraksha reads clearly as the centre of the mala.

Tulsi Ji and Rudraksha in Our Tradition

Tulsi ji is not an ordinary plant. Shri Krishna Himself honours Tulsi above all, and devotees lovingly call her Vrinda Devi or Tulsi Maharani. So Tulsi wood on the neck is a holy thing, not just a bead.

Rudraksha, in the same way, is honoured as arising from the grace of Bhagwan Shiva, and is worn by devotees as a mark of shelter in Him.

The Mantra for Wearing

Wear the kanthi with faith, not in a hurry. Devotees traditionally recite the Tulsi mala prayer given in Shri Hari Bhakti Vilas while putting it on:

अर्थ (हिंदी): हे तुलसी काष्ठ से उत्पन्न माले, हे श्रीकृष्ण के भक्तों को प्रिय! मैं आपको अपने कंठ में धारण करता/करती हूँ। कृपया मुझे श्रीकृष्ण का प्रिय बना दीजिए।

Meaning (English): O mala made from Tulsi wood, dear to the devotees of Shri Krishna — I wear you around my neck; kindly make me dear to Shri Krishna.

For the Rudraksha bead, devotees commonly recite ॐ नमः शिवाय (Om Namah Shivaya) while wearing. Practice differs between families and traditions, so follow the guidance you have received.

How to Wear This Kanthi Mala

1. Clean the mala gently with a dry cloth.
2. Offer the mala to the Lord first, with a short prayer.
3. Then wear it yourself while reciting the mantra above.

The scriptures say the devotee who offers the Tulsi mala to the Lord first, and only then wears it, is counted among the finest of devotees (bhagavatottam).

Rules for Wearing (Niyam)

You do not need diksha to wear this kanthi — anyone with faith may wear it, men and women alike. A few simple observances help preserve the right bhav:

• Prefer sattvik food; avoid tamsik food and drinks.
• Maintain good conduct while wearing the kanthi and tilak.
• Do naam-jap of the Lord's name you love.
• Treat the kanthi with respect, as a devotee's mangalsutra.
• Remove it before bathing — both Tulsi wood and Rudraksha absorb water and weaken with repeated soaking.

Care Guide

The two materials need slightly different care, and this is the one thing devotees often miss:

• Rudraksha needs occasional oil; Tulsi does not. Apply a little [sarson / chandan] oil to the 6mm Rudraksha bead every 3 months using a cotton bud, and wipe away the extra. At 2mm the Tulsi beads and thread soak up stray oil easily, so apply carefully.
• Handle 2mm gently. Fine beads mean a fine thread — open the clasp to remove it rather than pulling it over your head, and keep it away from zips and bag straps.
• Keep it dry; avoid soap, shampoo, perfume and chemicals.
• Store it in a Gomukhi bag when not worn, so it does not tangle.
• Both Tulsi and Rudraksha darken slowly with wear. This is natural and not a defect.
• If the thread breaks, the beads are traditionally restrung rather than discarded.
